Early life

Born on the 5th of may 1882 in sharply yorkshire England. He is the second son of Robert and Ellis Mawson. He moved to footy hill near Sydney in 1884 at the age of two, and the same year he moved all the way to Australia. At school he was a bright student who was 16 when he started university of Sydney. He first visited Antarctica at the age of 26, and was part of a team who climed mount Erebus, antarcticas active volcano and to claim the land of Antarctica. He was a geologist, explorer and a academic. In 1911 Mawson led the Australian Anartic exposition to Antarctica. When he was 30 years of age, his aim was to explore the costal area of Antarcica closest to Australia.
